We have all at some point received or given mentoring providing essential early experiences, opportunities and guidance along the way that in many cases can ultimately define what we achieve or become much later down the line, so when a chance meeting at a CIBSE Yorkshire Awards dinner introduced STEER to Specifi we wanted to know if there was anything we could do to help.
STEER has been set up by four female built environment and engineering professionals with the objective to connect the world of education to industry by guiding, mentoring and supporting undergraduates through the transition. Sharon Slinger a Director of Constructing Rainbows is the chair of STEER who is supported by Joanna Robinson, the Managing Director of Mansfield Pollard; Kayley Lockhead, a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with NG Bailey and Josie Rothera, a Course Director for Civil Engineering at Leeds Beckett University.
It was clear that Specifi would be able to help at our Yorkshire events so we worked together to utilise our Leeds Design event to host both mentees and mentors providing a great opportunity to take inspiration from our “future of developments talk” plus great networking with individuals from across the region’s Architectural community.
Sharon Slinger, STEER Founder, and Mentor said; “Thanks to Paul Brooke, CEO of Specifi for personally inviting us to the Specifi event. Our mentees had a great time and really enjoyed speaking with industry professionals about the latest products on the market and the projects that they are working on.”
“We are really excited about working with and learning from Specifi in the future and believe that experiences like this will directly benefit our students learning and expertise of real-world careers in the built environment sector.”
The STEER group has more helpful and informative events in the pipeline that will provide undergraduates with all they need to prepare themselves for, and succeed, in their career.
